Jillian Michaels is a best-selling author, television personality, and entrepreneur, and arguably one of the most well-known health and wellness experts in the country. A pioneer in the fitness industry with over 20 years of experience, Jillian Michaels is considered one of the most motivating and inspiring people on television, with more than 1.6 million visitors to her website and newsletter each month. I am a big fan of her smart, effective, and safe approach to fitness, and her DVDs have long been favorites of mine. I had the opportunity to ask Jillian a few questions and learn more about her latest BODYSHRED program: a 30-minute, high-intensity, metabolic conditioning workout.
1. Can you tell us about a particular moment, experience or mentor that inspired you to begin a career in fitness?
I was overweight as a kid, and I started taking martial arts at a young age. I learned to appreciate that fitness is not just about abs. When you are strong physically, you are strong in every aspect of your life.
2. There are many varied approaches/opinions on diet and exercise. What is the best way for someone to find the most effective regimen for himself or herself?
You really need to find something that speaks to you and will keep you motivated. If it’s not fun, there’s no point. If you’ve established an unreasonable goal, you’ll feel a sense of failure if you can’t commit to it 100%. Find something that inspires you to move, set realistic goals for yourself, and stick to them, progressing along the way. Ideally, a well-rounded workout regimen encompasses all fitness modalities – strength, power, speed, agility, balance, endurance, etc. This is why I designed BODYSHRED! It encompasses all of these key elements that will help you lose and keep off weight and effectively tone your muscles to transform your body—AND it’s only 30 minutes, so you can commit to it.
3. What is your go-to move?
I don’t have one. I believe in as much variety as one can get into a workout program. I feel that question is like asking a heart surgeon which tool he likes best, when we all know that to do his job properly he needs them all.
This is how I feel about fitness. I like to hit every muscle from as many different angles of push and pull as possible, with as many different modalities of fitness as possible—speed, power, flexibility, mobility, etc.
