“You deserve to live a life you love in a body you’re proud of.” That’s the philosophy of our latest guest Emily Cook Harris, the founder and head trainer of EMpowered.  She is not only one of the best but is also one of the most philanthropic trainers in the business. Her positive outlook and upbeat attitude are on the long list of reasons why this blonde powerhouse was recently named NYC’s 2013 hottest trainer by racked NY. Our amazing contributing editor Brooke Marrone sat down with Harris to discuss her fabulous tips for staying in top form and living a healthy life.

About Emily:
Emily Cook Harris is a personal trainer, dancer, coach, and philanthropist. Emily founded EMpowered in 2010 with the mission of combining two great passions: health & fitness and girls’ education. Her New York City based personal training company specializes in private residential training with 10 percent of proceeds supporting scholarships for young girls In the developing world. Emily has a bachelors degree in Kinesiology, is an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer, ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist and ACE Certified Group Fitness Instructor.

The Move:
The Kettlebell swing. Aka the Hinge & Snap! It’s an awesome metabolic exercise that torches fat, improves cardiovascular fitness, and strengthens the glutes, hamstrings, hips, back, shoulders, and core – all in one swing!

a) Start with your feet shoulder width apart and toes facing forward. Holding a kettlebell with both hands, send the hips backwards (hinging at the hip joint) and allow the knees to bend while maintaining a straight spine.  Keep the chest lifted and shoulder blades pinched together on your back.

b) Swing the bell towards your glutes to begin the momentum. Then,  snap the hips forward, straightening the legs (squeezing your butt and thighs) and allowing the bell to swing forward to chest height.

c) Let the bell swing back between the legs, repeating the hip hinge and soft bend in the knees.

d) Repeat and happy swinging!

Tip for staying healthy: Carry a water bottle with you at all times! Drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water (ex: 200 lb. person, drink 100 oz water DAILY). When I’m properly hydrated, I have more energy, improved focus and mental clarity, and less food cravings!
